Hollow clay pumpkins made with air dry clay can be painted and then lit with a votive candle (real or electric!). Students a can use a simple piece of wire to carve their pumpkins into Jack-O’-Lanterns.

Materials needed:

  1. Air dry clay

  2. A piece of cardboard (to rest the sculpture on while it dries)

  3. A piece of wire

Process:

  1. Make the clay into a ball.

  2. Stick your thumb inside and begin to make a pinch pot. Pinch and turn the ball around your thumb until it widens into a cup with a wall that is about 1/2” thick.

  3. Turn the cup upside down and shape your pumpkin.

  4. Pull the stem out of the top of the pumpkin by pinching and pulling the clay.

  5. Take a piece of wire and loop it at both ends. This is your tool to carve your pumpkin. You can also use it to create texture.

  6. Set your jack-o’-latern on the cardboard to dry.

In part two (next week) we will paint and light the jack-o’-latern!
