Clay Pumpkin Lanterns Part 1
Hollow clay pumpkins made with air dry clay can be painted and then lit with a votive candle (real or electric!). Students a can use a simple piece of wire to carve their pumpkins into Jack-O’-Lanterns.
Materials needed:
Air dry clay
A piece of cardboard (to rest the sculpture on while it dries)
A piece of wire
Process:
Make the clay into a ball.
Stick your thumb inside and begin to make a pinch pot. Pinch and turn the ball around your thumb until it widens into a cup with a wall that is about 1/2” thick.
Turn the cup upside down and shape your pumpkin.
Pull the stem out of the top of the pumpkin by pinching and pulling the clay.
Take a piece of wire and loop it at both ends. This is your tool to carve your pumpkin. You can also use it to create texture.
Set your jack-o’-latern on the cardboard to dry.
In part two (next week) we will paint and light the jack-o’-latern!
