Let rain soak the paper before or after painting.

We celebrated the recent storms by making ‘RAIN-TINGS.’

The idea was to let the rain affect the paintings, while exploring how water interacts with color.

Materials:

  1. A plastic or cookie sheet to soak paper.

  2. Water soluble paint, like tempera or watercolor. Tempera will have more saturated color. Acrylic will stain clothes.

  3. A table, canvas or board to put the wet paper on.

  4. Paper

  5. Paint, brushes and water cups

  6. A rag or sponge (optional)

Process:

  1. Submerge and soak the paper in water for at least 3 minutes.

  2. Remove the paper from the water, holding it diagonally so that the excess water drips from the corner.

  3. Lay the paper on your painting surface.

  4. Allow students to experiment with painting on wet paper. How does the color move and mix? Would they like to paint the rain?

  5. (Optional) leave the paintings outside in rain to see how the rain changes them.
