Feelings monsters are a fun way to play with water color stains and talk about feelings. This week, the brilliant Mrs. Babin read My Many Colored Days by Dr. Seuss to introduce the idea of talking about feelings through the language of colors. Afterwards we went outside to make our feelings monsters.

Materials Needed:

  1. Watercolor paper

  2. Water colors or other paints - tempera and acrylic will work, but acrylic will not wash out of clothing.

  3. A brush

  4. A sharpie, pencil or grease pencil

  5. A jar of water

Process:

  1. Paint a shape in clean water onto the paper.

  2. Press the wet brush into the watercolor and soak up a color.

  3. Touch the tip of the brush to the watery shape on the paper and enjoy watching the color spread through the shape.

  4. Repeat, using colors that relate to your feelings. Let the colors mix on the paper and begin to shape your monster.

  5. Using your drawing implement (sharpie, pencil, etc) add details to your monster. This can include eyes, outlines, shoes, horns and anything else you imagine!

  6. Take a moment to share what feelings your monster is showing.
