Blind Contour
I had so much fun leading the VAPA Collaborative Professional Development. Because we were on zoom, it was fun to start out with a Blind Contour drawing self-portrait project.
Materials:
A drawing implement (pen, pencil, marker - anything will do!)
Paper
Process: (a zoom video of me teaching this to college students is below)
Find a starting place on your paper where you will have enough room to draw in all directions.
Place your pen/pencil/marker on the spot.
Look up. You will not look down again until the drawing is over!
Look at your image in a mirror or on zoom. Find a starting point.
Slowly move your eyes around your image, letting your drawing hand follow. Concentrate and draw slowly and continuously. Do not lift your hand or look at your paper.
(If you get really lost, give yourself a chance to glance down)
Now, look at your wonderful, unique drawing! It’s weird and perfect! Best of all, you experienced the most important part of drawing: seeing.
Social-Emotional Benefit:
With this project we practice:
Letting go of control
Focusing on perception
Mindfulness and breathing
All products are valuable
The video below was my first time teaching on zoom - circa March 2020. YIKES!
