Create a Mushroom Library

Mushrooms growing in an open book.

Here’s a fun new project we are working on at my house: creating a mushroom library! It’s an easy project for kids to maintain, and so exciting to check on how the mushrooms grow.

We use deaccessioned library books about fad diets, politics, and old software.

Materials:

  1. Old books, hardback or paperback

  2. Mushroom spawn or kits (available for purchase). My favorites are from Back to the Roots.

  3. A water spray bottle

  4. A shaded surface. We are using stacked crates in the backyard.

Process:

  1. Soak the book and the mushroom spawn.

  2. Remove the book from the water and place it on the surface you plan to use.

  3. Place the mushroom spawn on the pages.

  4. Spray with water every day.
