A Magical Bird Needs a Nest

It’s spring time! The birds need to make their nests - including magical birds.

Perhaps you’ve been exploring ornithology in alignment with the NGSS-DCI and are ready to have some fun demonstrating that understanding. (For example, by doing a NestWatch Backyard Investigation)

Let’s describe a magical bird and then make them a nest that suits their needs.

Materials:

  1. Air Dry Clay

  2. Feathers

  3. Magical Objects

  4. Materials collected from your environment

  5. Card board (to sculpt on)

  6. Clay tools (…if you have them. We don’t yet, so we are using wires that I bent into figure 8s)

Process:

  1. Brainstorm: What is your bird like? What does it need for it's nest?

  2. Collect materials from around your site.

  3. Cut clay using wire into pieces for each student.

  4. Students may use a pinch pot or coil pot method to build their nest shapes. They may also just wing it and come up with an awesome shape.

  5. Stick your materials into the clay before it dries

  6. If you keep the nests in the classroom, you can sneak a treat into each one as an overnight gift from the birds. :)
